Some People Never Learn…Because They Are Insecure
OK, so I admit that’s a pretty crazy title for an article. But if you hear me out I am going to give you an awesome example of why some people never learn.
This is just one reason. It’s not the ONLY reason.
I was at a jobsite today and there was an old tractor there. It was pretty beat up and we ran into a bunch of trouble getting it to start. I was grateful that there were some people there that knew how to operate this piece of equipment, because I DIDN’T.
The first thing out of my mouth was “I have never run one of these before. How does this work?”
As a human being on this planet, it is very easy to get caught up in what other people might think about them. So the old me (the insecure me) would never have made that statement.
My thinking would have looked something more like:
“OH BOY I BETTER NOT SAY ANYTHING. I DON’T WANT THEM TO THINK THAT I DON’T KNOW WHAT I AM DOING. IF I SAY SOMETHING AND THEY FIND OUT THAT I DON’T KNOW HOW TO RUN THIS THING I MIGHT LOSE MY JOB.
This type of thinking could go on for HOURS.
Today though, I no longer think that way.
As it turns out, if you just ask some questions “How does this work?” People LOVE to talk about what they know.
Most people actually LOVE to help you!
It doesn’t always happen that way of course. There are individuals in this world who will start making fun of you because you don’t know how to do something.
Those are emotionally immature people and I ignore them and keep asking questions.
Honestly I really don’t care what they think about me or what I am doing. I want to know how to do something and that is more important than the opinion of someone who wants to try to devalue me.
That being said, I have been living this way for years now.
The odds of that happening are actually really rare (being devalued by someone). The vast majority of people just want to help, and really they love talking about themselves and what they know.
