Three years ago at this time I was sitting in front of a residential treatment facility for drug and alcohol abuse.

I was waiting to be admitted, and I remember standing in front of the building, wondering what was going to happen to me. I was wondering if I was finally going to “get my act together,” or if it would just be another failed attempt.

As I was looking at the building there was a series of thoughts that came to me. They were not my own thoughts, and I have no choice today but to call them divine intervention.

I remember thinking “Ok Robert, this is it. If you are going to get anything out of this, you are going to have to do it yourself. You are going to have to work hard and do your best to consider what these people are telling you.”

I was scared out of my mind, and then I had this thought that hit me like a ton of bricks:

“These People Don’t Owe You Anything”

Again, these are not any thoughts I had ever had before in my life. I realized at that moment that if I wanted to do something different, and if I actually wanted to change my life, that I had to get on board with whatever they were going to teach me.

It might be my last chance.

I decided that I was there by the grace of God, and that it really was a gift. It wasn’t a punishment or a “sentence” like I used to think before.

Later on in my journey of self-awareness and my walk with Christ, I came to believe a lot more things around the topic of entitlement.

No one owes me anything.

I don’t deserve to be treated any certain kind of way.

I am not nearly as special as my mother thinks I am.

No one even so much as owes me an explanation.

I don’t deserve to be spoken to any specific way either.

God certainly doesn’t owe me anything.

I Had to Get Over Myself

As it turns out, with a massive shift in perspective, and when I stopped making completely unrealistic demands on the world and its people, my life became super easy.

I had to figure out that I really wasn’t NEARLY as important as I thought I was.

People started to respect me, because I started respecting them.

I was that type to scream and yell bloody murder when I didn’t get my way.

I would accuse everyone of judging me and not treating me fairly.

The truth was, it was me that was judging everyone, and I was the one that was disrespectful.

I was completely clueless and out of touch with reality.

Today, I work hard on the fact that NO ONE owes me anything. If I want something in life, or I want to acquire or accomplish something, it is my responsibility to do the work necessary to get it.

Ultimately, I gained just enough humility to “Get Over Myself” because I’m not that important.

Sure, I’m a special and unique individual with gifts and talents.

Just Like EVERYONE Else..

The world doesn’t really care about me, or my problems and my sad story.

I’m totally OK with that today.

It’s freedom.

End of story…
